SUNY Rochester - Educational Opportunity Center
Rochester, New York
Project Description:
The existing 5-story steel framed former office building was renovated to house a vocational program for Rochester area students. The renovations converted existing spaces into nursing and cosmetology labs, early childhood education classrooms, mock surgical tech labs and a 400 seat multi-purpose room.
A 3,400 square foot addition was added along the north face of the building to house a large demonstration kitchen and a fully equipped teaching kitchen which is used to serve a 50 seat dining area.
Siracuse Engineer's Role:
Complete structural engineering design for the facility including
- Design of the super structure and foundations for the 3,400 square foot addition.
- Lateral force resisting system design for the new addition.
- Support and reinforcement of the existing structure to accommodate the renovations proposed within the existing building.
Challenges:
As part of the architectural design, a two story open space was required on the first floor within the existing building. to create the space, two existing columns were supported by new transfer girders at the third floor elevation. The girders were designed and detailed to be installed prior to the column removal therefore eliminating the need for shoring down to the existing foundations.
